A Case Study on Play Therapy for an Infant with Insecure Attachment
Lee Kyeong-Ok

Abstract
The establishment of secure attachment between infants and their parents affects overall development of infants and, in particular, provides a foundation for building infants¡¯ confidence in others. Infants with a secure attachment relationship trust other people and show positive attitudes and high curiosity. Given that a secure attachment relationship could lead to desirable development of infants, the establishment of attachment at the infant stage is very crucial. This case study is about a play therapy administered to an infant who was anxious, nervous, and easily irritated, erupted burst of anger, and wet the bed at night due to insecure attachment with parents. A total of 30 sessions were conducted from March 2007 to January 2008. At the early stage of the sessions, the infant was very wary, sensitive to sound, and easily surprised and had difficulties of separation. Around the middle stage of the sessions, the infant established confidence in the therapist
and expressed needs, fear, and anxiety while playing. At the final stage, the infant showed increased positive attitudes towards other people and did desirable care-taking play. However, the therapy was terminated early because of movement of the infant¡¯s family, leaving room for improvement of emotional stability of the infant and secure relationship between the infant and the infant¡¯s mother.
